Yoga on the beach and other moments of bliss

Lotuspad was lucky enough to spend a week with family at a house rental in Bridgehampton, NY – out of the office, away from piles of paperwork, worries, Boston and life in general. But we did not escape the rain and clouds, which hung out with us on our beach vacation like a pesky uninvited relative.

No matter, the evening thunderstorms were magical and the soft clouds and mist obscured the harsh (and often boring) chiaroscuro tones of bright summer days.

Another reason I was happy for the rain was that it gave me ample opportunity to test my mats in wet conditions. Customers have reported using their mats outside in the rain with great success, so on our second day I pulled out the Lava mat and had a very magical practice on the big, wet lawn in the drizzle. It worked great, no slipping, and the soft grass gave a perfect cushion.

But the ultimate perfect vacation yoga moment came on the beach towards the end of the week. My husband and I left Eleanor with my mom for an hour or so and went down to Sagg Beach by ourselves. Under dark and drizzly skies I unrolled my mat and had a incredible practice in the sand. It was my first time using a yoga mat on the beach (and it was my first ‘complete’ practice on a beach). Under the sky and before the sea, I understood a new level of devotion.

Happy summer to everyone – namaste.
